Great writeup Mike.
We were in Naples for the day last year. We were cruising on the Brilliance of the Seas. I really enjoyed the interaction with the locals also. I guess I was getting in touch with my Italian lineage.
We hope to get back and this time go to the Amalfi coast area.

If I had been there on vacation instead of work, I would have done that. Maybe also Capri. But a longtime interest in Roman history more or less required me to spend most of my weekend time seeing the excavations. My interest in mountains required the trip to the volcano.
Superb write-up, Mike. I'd say you made the most of a few days in that area. I haven't been there in 15 years; I doubt if too much has changed except the prices. Sounds like you had a great time. I liked your conclusions. I need to go back some time.
My wife, grown son and I took a day trip by train to Naples from Rome. I concur about the scooters and motorbikes - crazy - and about the pizza - great, the best I've ever had.
Very writeup! Interesting that you were there for airplane emissions modeling. I worked years ago as a technical information specialist for a NASA/FAA contract on the effect of supersonic transport (SST) emissions on the ozone layer. Published a monthly scientific newsletter that went out to modelers and other researchers all over the world. Also had some very nice trips to conferences in Boulder, CO (National Center for Atmospheric Research), Boston (MIT and international reseachers), and Gainesville, FL (Univ of FL).
I went to Naples a few years ago with my former bf. Here are some pics. Took a day trip to Capri, which was lovely. You can see Vesuvius in the background of the pic with the bf. It was taken from the balcony of our hotel, which was a restored former palace and really nice. Not sure how he got that on his per diem, but I was impressed!

You probably interacted with someone I work with, Steve Baughcum.
^ I doubt it...this was a LONG time ago. The people I dealt with were older and are probably retired now. I wasn't long out of college. But it was an interesting job.
