I test drove a Miata before buying the S2000. For me, the advantages of the Miata were cleaner styling (in the second generation; I don't like the new one) and smaller size (so obviously I don't consider "roomier" to be an "improvement"). But even the Mazdaspeed version just didn't have enough power for me.
Which is fine; acceleration is not the Miata's niche. Affordability and fun are.

I think Miata is here to stay though S2K may not be. Even though S2K is more exclusive vehicle, Mazda obviously had better business sense regarding their convertible which is a shame for Honda. That goes on to show the race is not always to the swiftest.
