Default The News

We are bombard with current events and breaking news daily. I know it is hard to resist posting about them and I am as guilty as anyone for doing it.

I would like to propose we leave the latest news stories to the news stations.

When someone has something “personal” to add to any event it is interesting to read; however, as a general rule I would like to keep this site as a place to get away from daily news, other than auto news.

Anyone agree? What are your thoughts?

As a regular "offender" I will do my best to agree to this Dave. I can do that. I know your intentions are good Dave, but I think it is a bit more difficult then it sounds. So no comments about plane crashes, presidential funerals, or events like the superbowl, stanley cup, world series, or world leaders trying to destroy my homeland , etc. - just automotive subjects. "News" stories can cover a lot of things. But I can do adhere to that, again it is a good suggestion for the greater good, but there are many news events that affect everyone .

Sign me up. There is too much news on the tube from all of the talking heads who think they know everything, I listen to our local news stations and catch a half hour of the National news except for any news on Trump.

My initial reaction is no, I don’t agree. This forum has long been about life, in and out of cars. Other than politics, which has its own forum (rightfully so), I do not think we should restrict what is discussed. I find the variety of subjects interesting. Plus it is not enforceable. Everyone has his or her reasons for coming to this site. We need to leave it to the users to determine what to post/read or not.

I wasn't trying to suggest the entertainment news such as the superbowl, stanley cup, world series be avoided.

I was not trying to suggest that we restrict anything, nor police anything.

I was just expressing an opinion. Given the views and the little feedback, I guess I got my answer.

The thread has only been up for 2 hours.

I don't understand what you mean. Are you talking about the plane and helicopter crash, for instance?

I'm with Deb as far as I understand. You don't have to read threads. There are threads I never look at because they don't interest me.

Dave:
First of all, I want to sincerely thank you for bringing this issue up in what I believe to be exactly the way it needs to be addressed. Many are in a position of wanting to avoid that sort of content and it is difficult enough with all the constant bombardment of TV and internet news. We all have access to these sources of information and they don't need to be repeated here.

I'm personally fine with reading about all kinds of slice of life issues from Gene's credit card fraud woes to Jerry's furnace crapping out, or Patricia's remote neighborhood mail theft issues. Irritating?
Sure, but those are minor issues that are readily addressed and far from disturbing or traumatic.

Joey:
I don't think anyone wants to limit what you can talk about but no one cares what happens in Canadian politics or, for that matter your opinions on American or other politics. There is a place for that and it is in the political forums on the site and not here. Please don't feel attacked or singled out as that is not mine or anyone else's intent. For me, I enjoy having you here and value it. The political rules are not a Vintage thing. That is site wide at S2KI.

To all:
I've been posting on and reading this site for over 20 years and I'd like to continue to be able to do so and enjoy it. Some issues are sad or tragic like the discussions here on family struggles with mental health or tragedies to friends and family. The difference is that these are personal issues that participants choose to share and I think it is cathartic. I want the Vintage forums to be place of refuge and community. I've seen people leave this forum in the past and I suspect some of them do it because they simply don't have the emotional or mental bandwidth for it.

Some of you I've never met in person, many of you I have. My wife Mary and I have e also made quite a number of of close friends as a result. There's a LOT of value in that.

As far as the current national tragedy goes, we have government officials whose job it is to investigate, sort outand address these issues. I believe we should just let them do just that.
I'm sure they will report and release information once they do.

Thank you all for reading and considering this.

Respectfully,

Mark

Dave, I wasn't suggesting not talking about entertainment / sports news specifically, but if the forum was to go that route you suggested then someone would have to say what kind of news was proper and what kind of news was not proper. If people want to talk about sports news but not airplane crashes then that is fine with me, we just need to know in advance. I would just like to know what to avoid posting about, once I had a better idea I would tailor my posts. For example- If the big earthquake of California ever does happen and parts of the state fall into the sea it would seem odd to not discuss it on the forum. I found the wildfires event to be very interesting and I enjoyed information posted in that thread by people like Kyras and Jim who have a nice was of educating us with their experience on the topic, and with me being a Geography nut.

I always thought Vintage forum topics touched upon daily life events and not always about S2000's and automobiles.
