Default One issue with Garmin since update

We updated our Garmin shortly before SF. At one point, the screen went blank while we were driving. I turned it off and on again, and all was well.

Last night I took Mom to NH. I had the Garmin plugged into the car charger (have used the charger before, but not in the WRX). While driving along, the screen changed to the one you see when you use your USB connection to update the Garmin. I disconnected it from the charger, and at first, it didn't seem to want to turn off/on , but after a minute it loaded maps again, and I reconnected the charger. I went the rest of the way to NH with no problem.

I took the unit with me when I got out of the car in NH. When I went to head home, I got that same weird screen. I fiddled with it a bit, and it came back on to the correct screen. I didn't bother with the car charger for the ride home as I only had about an hour and a half and the unit had just been charged.

Any ideas before I call Garmin?

PS. I did hit the reset button when I got home

PPS. This was my first longer trip in the WRX. I like it! It's quiet, the seats are VERY comfortable, and though it's not great gas mileage compared to some other vehicles out there, I was over 26 mpg on the highway. VERY happy with our purchase of the WRX.

If this has never happened before, it sounds like a virus. Yes you can infect your gps, cell phone, mp3 players with viruses while doing online updates. Who knew. I found this out a few months ago.

I haven't noticed any of those things -- I have the update. But in Pittsburgh the Garmin took us to a Sunoco Station a few miles away from the airport and announced that we had arrived at "Terminal C".

I'll have to call and ask. The only update I've done on it recently is the new 08 maps.

I didn't want to disappoint you Lainey. I too got the notice that the Garmin '08 updates were available but couldn't get excited about doing it. What do they charge?

I think it was $70.00. Inexpensive compared to what some of the folks pay to update nav units that are permanently affixed in a vehicle.
OMG. What a rip off.

Mine sux. They don't fold up any better than the 07 maps. The writing is still very small, and I still have to read the index to find the town I am going to. I have to pull over to consult them, and they don't say anything to me as I'm driving to let me know my turn is coming up. Plus, I always need to stop and get more maps to find local streets.

To be really useful, I have to install MapReader V.1 in the passenger seat to read the maps as I drive. MapReader needs coffee, special lenses and water to operate properly, plus she needs me to stop from time to time to refresh.

Which paper maps did you get?
