It is somewhat silly IMHO that people are still asked for employers and dates on an application. All HR departments will do is verify that a person worked there during those dates. They will not discuss performance so all it really is worth is proving that one worked there and were not in jail during that time frame.
So in the end what is the point?
So one of the big DOD primes has a submittal process where not only do you submit for positions but it also scans and makes recommendations for jobs you match.

I didn't know I could do that. I can't even begin to imagine what keywords popped up to match some of the positions.

The +1 says, based on his job searching experience, the higher-level jobs are filled by networking (word of mouth). That's why it is so important to get the word out that you are looking for a job and not pass up an opportunity to network. Good luck!
