Default Potato Chips

I can't seem to find a brand I like. National brands like Lays taste like crap to me. I use to love chips. I thought it was me. But both my wife and son think something has happened to change the taste of potato chips. The latest one we tried was Jays. $4.29. Aad after the first bit I was ready to toss the bag out.

Your thoughts or suggestions?

Charles Chips is probably my favorite but hard to find in Florida. My guilty pleasure is Salt & Vinegar Pringles though.

We had been getting the Lays Kettle Cooked Sea Salt and Cracked Pepper chips, but now I'm buying Terra Mediterranean chips, which are vegetable chips including sweet potato.

I like Terra chips too, but I prefer the original ones with all sorts of colors and flavors. If I eat potato chips, I like the Cape Cod reduced fat kettle cooked chips.

Potato chips are highly regionalized. I worked for Frito-Lay decades ago and one thing that highly influenced taste was the water used in processing. I worked at a plant that had it's own soft water wells with no chlorine added. We air freighted chips weekly to Dallas for corporate headquarters use. We hand picked them as well!

We thought Pringles to be the spawn of the Devil!

Slight change of subject: A vital taste ingredient of corn chips is the amount of oil in them. Quality control used to be roughly 38% by weight. Yep, nearly 40% grease. Yum! Corn chip oil was liquid; potato chip oil was solid like Crisco. Both came in rail cars. The potato chip oil came in steam-heated tank cars. If the heater stopped working the rail road had to bring in a steam generator to thaw the car out. Takes several days in winter.

I would guess everyone's seen this Lay's ad, with a highly recognizable car in it.

with Bill, plus I really like these Utz Chips

The Utz are regional, so they probably aren't available in MI.
