I suspect that Malwarebytes will be able to remove the worm for free.
Unfortunately, this version of the mutated Win 7 2012 was able to out smart Malwarebytes and would not let me run it.
My Son's laptop just got hit by this virus about a week ago. While Malwarebytes would not run when the OS was in normal mode, restoring to a previous checkpoint via safemode allowed Malwarebytes to run and remove it. I should note that Security Essentials did not find it on a full scan while Malwarebytes did.

It's a shame you had to reset to the factory setting.

Thanks for the info about Security Essentials vs Malwarebytes. Sorry to learn about your Son's laptop.

Because I had to do a total reset I-Tunes does not see my I-Phone 4 because it has "lost the pairing". Does anyone know how to fix this issue? Otherwise, I will have to wait until Monday and make a trip to the Apple store unless I can find something online about this.

Happy New Year to everyone.

This same virus got my home computer a month ago. (I started a thread about it here). I also tried to reset the computer to a previous date, and it got it working, but very slowly, and did not get rid of the virus. Wound up having the hard drive erased and started over.
I use AVG, although I did not have the "paid" version running. Since then I have added Malware Bytes as well. I will not use Norton as I have had nothing but bad experiences with them.

I hope that the person(s) that wrote the Win7 Antivirus bug gets run over by a truck in 2012. And all others like him. Why the FBI/government doesn't find these people and prosecute is beyond me. The damage they cause must be in the millions of dollars.

I have spent hours and hours on this issue. First, with the help of Noam at Internet Brands helping me identify the problem. It started out that we could not access their web sites, then it totally held us hostage when it would not let us access any site but theirs with a screen that stated that they could "solve this problem for $69.95" if that is not fraud I don't know what is? Then hours (all toll) reloading software and putting stuff back on the C drive so that it does not just live on the back up drive in case that fails. (I did have a Maxtor back up drive fail about a year ago. It was the first time I have ever had a Maxtor drive fail on me). I guess the real issue is that most of these attacks come from "off shore" where the FBI has no jurisdiction. So I join you in wishing them ill fate in 2012.

Wow. I found out about this when I ran into Matt in the s2ki chat room.

I'm relying on AVG free version as well. Guess I'd better get Symantic Endpoint Protection up and running on my home PC. Supposed to be using it anyway because I often have to vpn into the hospital's network and that's what we have there.

Matt, I'm glad you got your pc cleaned up. Sorry you had to do a re-install but I bet it runs faster now.

Still some issues with logging in for some folks. I found I have to double click my bookmark, and it's taking a long time for the web site to load.
