Default Question for the electronics gurus

I have a 2-part personal weather station that connects wirelessly to the control console in my office. The anemometer is located at the peak of my roof, and even though I mounted it there some 10 years ago, I no longer want to make that climb.
Well, last August, it suddenly stopped reporting, so I figured it was a dead back-up battery (it has a solar panel that supplies power otherwise) so I had Bea's grandson climb the roof and replace the battery. No luck. Still not reporting. So, I decided to purchase a new sending unit figuring that the old one was just shot. In the meantime, her grandson joined the Navy and his weekends are busy, so I just let it go. Jump forward to mid-January. All of a sudden it started working again! WTF? and it's still working. Is there a reasonable explanation for this?

Here is a picture of the transmitter with solar panel.

Have you reset your WiFi router recently, ether trying to fix an Internet access issue or because of a power failure?

^This is not WiFi. It is a radio frequency unit.

If that thing has been up for 10 years in all kinds of weather, I would bet there is a crack in a wire insulation causing it to behave erratically. Little water gets in there, electrons get lost.

Gene, you may have had corrosion on the battery terminals. enough vibration and it made contact again.
Don't be surprised if it magically stops work again too.

I had the same thing happen with mine. I ended up replacing the entire unit. I believe you can still get parts from Davis.

My cheapie little accurite weather station has ben slowly losing functions.
At this point thermometer, humidity and barometer still works but moving parts, rain gauge, wind and direction have all surrendered to the elements.

David, I purchased the entire replacement unit. As soon as I can find someone willing to climb on the roof it will be replaced.

Jerry, I suspect you are correct. Anything that stops and then restarts by itself is eventually doomed to failure.

Well, we had heavy rain overnight, and as I suspected, it stopped reporting!

Update. Came back from lunch and it's now working fine. Go figure!
