Default Recruiter or Reconnoiter-er?

Greetings all.

I received a voice mail today, a cold contact from a recruiter. That in itself is not unusual, but his message described an executive opportunity at a level of detail that IS unusual for a voice mail. I haven't returned the call, but I know the position he's describing is genuine, and that his call is aimed at recruiting me.

So...I'm wondering if recruiters are ever retained by a company to conduct reconnaissance on their own employees. Sounds paranoid I know, but does that happen? Could this be a test of my level of commitment to my present company?

Thanks

Steve

Depends. How paranoid are you?

yes there may be a few hyper-neurotic management teams out there.
ok my humble opinion, if your company is that paranoid do you want to work there?

Would your employers expect you to turn down a 2x or 3x salary?
without making the contact you can't know.

further if they ever called you on it, just say you figured you would go to find out what you could learn.

Given the fees recruiters get; I doubt a company would do this except in very unusual circumstances. I think your approach is correct, and it never hurts to look, unless of course, you have a non-compete agreement.

I would not want to be working for a company that stooped to snooping about my loyalty. I would treat it as a legitimate call until you have reason not to. If you are suspicious, then try to check out the caller before you give him much info. Nice to be in demand!!

Just because you are paranoid doesn't mean they aren't out to get you.

It could be someone who does exactly what you described for a living.

But I doubt it.

I wouldn't work for any company that would treat me like that (and I wouldn't join any club that would accept someone like me as a member).
