"Roadside America"
There are a lot of nostalgic remnants of outrageous Roadside attractions along the two-lane roads of America....now by-passed by Ike's Interstates.
Here's a link to one of my favorites, LUCY THE ELEPHANT in Margate NJ
Wouldn't it be fun to post an example of By-Gone Auto America for each of our Vintage Member States
PS: I give credit for this thread idea (in case it's a successful one

This brings back a lot of memories. My family, 5 of us took some very long road trips. Three that are memorable is driving from NY to Acapulco Mexico and back in 3 weeks, NY to California (via NDAK, SDAK etc, and return via Nevada), NY across Canada. No interstate system and no AC. Texas is hot in July. Also the car had the obligitory plastic seat covers. I swear that you could feel the back of your legs sizzle when you got in the car after it had been parked.
The part that my kids have a hard time relating to is the no interstate system (saw a lot of RT 66), no fast food chains (eating at all local diners was an experience), and no motel chains other than the occasional Howard Johnson.

I have been inspired to photograph the "Big Duck" on Route 24 (south side) in Flanders, NY between Riverhead and the Hamptons. I will post the image when I return from my trip to Long Island for Thanksgiving. The "Big Duck" is on the National Historic Building Registry and is quite the site.
