S-abuse confessional
At the risk of starting yet another risque thread, I have to get this off my chest:
[confession]
This morning, sitting in a left-turn lane waiting for one of our super-long traffic lights to cycle, I watched a guy in a yellow AP1 pull into the parking lot of a Dunkin' Donuts. The entrance apron has a little rise, and he stopped on it to let a car pull out of a parking place -- so he'd not have too far to walk after scarfing down his half-dozen, I suppose.
As he sat there, he slipped the clutch to keep from rolling back into the street, and it went on for quite a while, at least ten foward-backwards, with no brake lights the whole time.
I was too far away to holler at him and I didn't want to run across the six traffic lanes to go beat him up. So I just watched in horror.
Maybe I'm overly sensitive about this because I wiped out the clutch this way on my old Sunbeam as part of the learning-to-drive-a-stick experience.
But it hurt to be helpless.
[/confession]
There. I feel better now. HPH

In the old British iron if you road the clutch to much the throwout bearing would wear out in no time. I don't know if that still applies today in cars like the S2000. I really smoked my clutch on a dyno that put up more resistance than it could take and within a few days it cleaned itself and has been fine since.
I have been going to a repair shop that was recommended to me by a former co-worker back in the early 90's. They are the ones that have done the work that keep our beloved 1986 Civic Si running to the age of 253,493 miles. They have replaced one clutch for us over the years. On the Civic at 147,000 miles. We used to have the second highest mileage vehicle that they worked on.
At any rate: They were telling me about a customer that has a Mustang that goes through clutches in a little over twenty-five thousand miles. No, he does not race it or do burn outs. It is just his daily driver. After he had the third clutch installed, he asked: Do you have any suggestions for me? Their answer was: Yes, get an automatic next time.
