San Francisco
I spent a little over a week last week in San Francisco to visit friends and family. The weather was mild, and I felt extremely guilty because Sue was stuck back in Ohio coping with 20" of snow and with IRS tax forms to fill out.
Because I am a native San Franciscan, I only took a few pictures. (Note-all pictures were taken with a point-and-shoot digital camera) I also saw the Annie Leibowitz photo exhibit at the California Palace of Legion of Honor Museum. The photo exhibit runs from March through May. It's worth a visit to see her photographs. BTW, gasoline prices are typically high in SF. Some stations were selling premium grade gas for over $4/gallon.
America's only Mobile Historic Monument

Here is another type of cable car: note the cable grip at each end, so the car never has to be turned around.

Muir Woods National Monument-the tall timbers can grow up to over 300 ft.

Pretty flowers in Sausalito-across the bay from SF

Typical victorian house in Pacific Heights district in SF

Crab gathering is getting more restrictive off the municipal pier

My first sighting of the Smart Car (it's pretty cute)

Entry to SF Chinatown

Golden Gate from the Marin County side

Western terminus of the Lincoln Highway (1st transcontinental highway-New York City to San Francisco) at Lincoln Park in SF

Detail of 500-yr old decorative German plate (Legion of Honor museum)

Plaque marking site of gun battery guarding the Golden Gate bridge

Mounting sites for one of the large guns guarding the bridge

I spent a number of weekends in SF when I was in the Navy. My favorite city. I took my family there in the eighties and we stayed 3 nights in the St. Francis Hotel, toured the city and visited Napa Valley. Stayed there one night 2 years ago en route to Hawaii.

My son and family lived in Fairfield for 5 years - 45 miles away from SF and even closer to Muir Woods and Napa. I used to go to San Fran twice a year and always enjoyed visiting there. They don't miss living in CA, but I miss the circuitous driving trips to and fro - we saw a lot of the country along the way.
Thanks for the pics!
Last time I was out there was many, many years ago, and each and every time I'm there there is one thing I do the 1st day I get there, no matter what. I run right down to Fisherman's Warf and look for an outside vendor selling clam chouder in a sourdough bowl. One of the world's best food combos!!!
YUMMM!

Welcome to our side of the coast. But did you see any S2000s while you were here? And did you think about driving a manual transmission car on those hills (with their STOP signs at the top).
