Selling Nemo
I'm not really sure where to ask this question; this seemed like a good place.
I have a fishtank with a bunch of fish. A whole bunch of fish. They keep having babies! With my work schedule getting more hectic, I feel that I'm no longer a good fish owner so I want to give them away before becoming delinquent in their caretaking. Is it possible to do this? Any idea where I'd start? Any good web sites I should be aware of to ask for help? I'd be more than happy if someone stopped by & took 'em all free of charge - tank and all if they'd like!
I have five yellow cichlids (yellow labs I think they're called) and at least a dozen and a half "great danios" - maybe more, they keep multiplying. It's a 40 gallon tank.
Just curious.
And to make the discussion more involved:
- Anyone else here a fish enthusiast?
- Is it immoral to have pets?
- Did you enjoy Finding Nemo more than your kids?
And to keep it relevant to cars:
- Anyone have underwater cars in their fishtank?

We had a guinea pig that grew too big for our kids to take care of. Nobody wanted it so we simply gave it to the local pet shop (free of charge) and told them to find a good home for it.
A pet store would probably take your fish and sell them. They just wouldn't want to pay you for them. If that works for you thats how you could get rid of them.
My youngest son liked Nemo, my wife and I didn't see it.

Yeah Ralpers got it right! Give them away to a fish shop. Try to find a Mom And Pop fish shop. They take better care of thier fish and are more hands on. I've owned fish since I was seven years old. I think I will always own fish. Its lots of fun and the tank looks great in any room! Its also been proven to help with stress. Sit down and stare out into the fish tank for five or ten minutes....very relaxing! Owning Fish is like gardening, Ya either have it or ya don't. Some people own fish and they always die. They read books and take all the care...but the result is the same, Dead fish. Others like me
buy fish and they live for 5 plus years sometimes 10 plus years.
If your fish are breeding then you are a good fish guy. Breeding is the ultimate sign of happy and heathy fish. I suggest down sizing phoenix. Maybe a small ten gallon tank. Easy to take car of but still lots of fun. A small tank like that looks great in the bedroom or even the bathroom!

Phoenix,
I am a fish enthusiast, albeit not as much as I was in my teens and early twenties. A topsy-turvy work schedule coupled with life's other woes isn't conducive to a pet environment. We still have two tanks, and Phoenix, I'd be happy to help you out, except shipping livestock across the border, especially water-borne fish in these sub-zero temps may be interesting
All said, I don't think it is immoral to keep pets. We have two cats and three dogs in the family household. True, they often get the short end of the stick when we are out working, and home late, unable on some days to take them for a walk. However, cats and dogs, dogs especially, are by nature social animals. There is much to be said for the bond that forms between person and dog. We learn from them, and they learn from us. We feed off of each other's feelings and emotions. (Yes, dogs have feelings too). If we care for our pets as much as we do ourselves, how then can it be immoral? I'd say that the case for exotic animals as pets is a whole 'nother discussion altogether. A hobby that I disprove of completely.
No underwater cars in my fishtank. Last time I checked, rusted 57 Chevy's with blinking headlights weren't common place in the Amazon, or the Great Barrier Reef

I tend to adopt orphans, the throw away animals that nobody wants. Right now, were down to just 1 dog and 1 cat. The dog is a 110# half Lab, half water buffalo, that someone left behind when they moved. Our town is still somewhat rural, and she (Macie) ran thru the farms and backwoods for 5 days before the cops got hold of her. She was a mess, and full of worms, but after 500$ or so spent at the vet, and some pretty intense obedience and house training, she is like a second child to us. Our cat was also found in the woods, her and 2 other kittens that didn't survive unfortunately. She was fed with an eye dropper for 2 weeks, and it was touch and go for awhile, but she's 9 yrs old and healthy now. She has 7 toes on one front paw, 6 on the other, and the standard 5 toes on each rear paw.
If it's immoral to take in these 2 freaks, so be it.
