Default Sharks

Ever had a shark come close? When we were in Key West, we watched a 7 footer maybe more swim right between 20+ people. It was 3 or 4 familys in a couple feet of water giving the kids jet ski rides. We were on our balcony looking down and watched it swim toward them. It swam right up to a kid, then right thru the group of people. The kid yells shark and they ignored him. Later one of them almost hit it with a jet ski as it cruised them again. It broached right next to the jet ski and the lady on the back had a good look. They stayed in the water.

That evening we saw them as we were going to dinner. We asked them why they ignored the shark. They said they thought it was just a big fish. The kid got all excited (maybe 10 yrs old) telling them that he told them it was a shark. I don't know where they were from but it was obvious they had no clue, none of them could swim (all wearing life vests in 2' of water) and they'd never operated a jet ski before.

I wade flats all the time and I've had small sharks, usually bonnet heads follow me around like a dog heeling. When you're fishing and you have sharks on the flat it indicates there are fish on the flat too. If I had one that big next to me, I'd walk on water to get out of there.

Thought I'd mention this in case you're headed to the beach.

After hearing about the two attacks on the east cost recently....

I really don't want to go swimming in the ocean anymore!

Probably 10-12 years ago we were vacationing in Daytona Beach and my daughter an I were maybe waist deep (for me) in the surf. We'd been trying to body surf and just messing around watching little fish swimming along the very top crests of the waves. She had just tried to ride a wave in and was maybe 10 feet closer to shore than me. At one point she says "Dad, look" and points behind me. I turn, and there is the tip of a dark gray fin about the size of my hand cruising along between two swells and maybe 6-8 feet away from me.

I thought it was just a bigger fish and turned back toward my daughter who, to my surprise, had fled the scene and was two steps way from the safety of the beach! I don't know if it was a shark. I guess it could have been, and i guess it wouldn't have had to be very big to have a nice chomp.

After these recent events, I think this August I will be much more careful IF I decide to venture in.

Took my 11 year old grandson fishing today on a charter boat and he caught a 4 foot brown shark. Gave him a battle, took him 20 minutes to land it. Released it, can't keep them.

I've been to the beach several times but I have yet to see a shark in Lake Erie. I have seen a few floaters but no sharks!

Never heard of a bull shark? They're the most vicious of all the shallow water sharks and they can go up fresh water rivers ,and live in fresh water. Type "Bull sharks in lake Erie" into google.

There was a 16 foot Great White cruising our waters. It got tagged with a transmitter to keep track of her. I think it was named Mary Lee. The pix of the guy tagging it looked like a scene from Jaws. What a monster.
