Shooting the Breeze 17-19
Matt, for a final thought, you might ask something like 'were you near the downtown twister' or 'near the big downtown fire' or something like that ...... something that never happened just to see what their reply is.
Matt, here's some thoughts from a friend of mine. Here is the likely scam if there is one; they pay a portion of the rent in advance, some of it is nonrefundable, then they change their minds and ask for all the money less the deposit back. What happens is he sends them good money, but they’ve given him fraudulent funds which take a while to work through the system. So if he simply says the returnable funds have to reside for 30 days due to the international implications, then he’s covered himself because those fraudulent funds will certainly be sorted out within the 30 days.
This article is primarily for Patty, (@Kyras) but it is an interesting discussion of fireflies from Dana Milbank of the WaPo. Fireworks Show Like No Other

All good stuff, thanks all.
@boltonblue not so interesting fact: NZ phased out all domestic checks (bank and personal) in 2021, and foreign check acceptance ended last year. All commerce here is now via cards, mobile digital wallet, direct bank transfer, or cash, with a little bit of crypto. There is a push to phase out cash from some quarters as well.

Matt,
I have enough cynicism to not quite trust a non-cash system.
You know as well as I do computers and networks never makes errors. right?
from a totalitarian govt perspective, fully traceable transactions are delightful.

I'm very much pro-cash, its used for about half the transactions through my side business.
For about 10 years I was probably one of the foremost ATM experts in the country, and possibly still am. I spent a number of years writing the back end software that enabled 50% of NZ's ATMs to accept cash and check deposits, including validating the MICR line etc.
Sadly all that code disappeared with our old system, and now I'm reduced to writing SQL queries, answering endless questions, toggling radio buttons, and selecting drop down options. Still, they pay me a whole lot more now too.
