Jerry, sorry to hear of your mom's fall. Hospital's are never fun and not a good a place to spend the holiday.

The upside was, her grandson works at the hospital as a nurse so she got some free personal time on Xmas. 
it wasn't a bad fall.
the funny part was about 5 seconds after she whacked her head she said, " S#!^ now I have to go to the hospital."
So it's not like she got knocked for a loop. Her mental acuity is still really really sharp.
As for her body, well let's just say i know where i got a lot of my genetics from.

The progress on the repairs is going well. No frame damage, no engine damage except for the broken air box and replacing the radiator, which was bent but not leaking. Should be finished middle of January. Repair place is using all OEM parts.

It's always a good feeling when the advice you give your grown kids IS the correct advice and they go with it. This is not always the case. 
I'm a pretty resourceful person. I've dealt with insurance companies, auto, health, whatever, and worked at an insurance company for a couple of years. I'm aware of various limits and coverages on policies and what they represent. My father in law used to say "Insurance is a bet" "they are betting you won't, and you are betting you will." Very true, but one must cover one's a$$. Rick has been involved with cars, car dealers, parts people all his working life.
Time for the granddaughter to replace the crashed Focus. She's been working and saving, and wanted a VW GTI. I know VW doesn't have the best ratings as reliability, but kids want what they want. We (us and her parents) tried to talk her into something more boring, reliable but no go. They looked at a few cars and some of the used car dealers appeared to be deserving of the bad name that they get. I "suggested" they need to either stick to local places where Rick might have connections or look for a place with better reliability/service ratings. The son and daughter in law both have a commute and work odd ours. Not a lot of time for some of this stuff, and they are not the most resourceful people. Enter retired car guy (Rick) who spent some time on the internet and found, we HOPE to be a decent used car for her. 2008 VW GTI with 80K for mileage.
They (Rick and the granddaughter) checked it out earlier this week and the deal should close later this week. Now on to insuring a car for a young, inexperienced driver with a surcharge hanging over her head. I urged them, as did my attorney sister to put the car in the granddaughter's name, and on her own policy. Even if the cost was more than adding the vehicle to their policy. We all need to limit our "exposure liability" when young kids are behind the wheel. They went to the insurance agent today and that's what's going to be done. It's not cheap. Auto insurance in MA is never cheap. There are cheaper plans on line, but you do get what you pay for and attorney sister strongly advises against them. Ally will have a decent policy with decent coverage and actually gets a $300.00 discount for her good report card!
I swear she was just born yesterday. Time passes.

Silver gray. Not interested in learning manual, so they found an auto. Daughter in law can't drive stick either.

Don't get me going on car insurance for younger people! My son's insurance is $225/mo on a 7 year old car, which I am well aware of since we help him out by paying it (its 60% more than our new CR-V).

Yep, that's about where hers will be for a 10 year old car!!!
