During the Stanley Cup presentation it was stated that it is the most coveted trophy in all of team sports! I don't agree. What do you think?
IMO it could be argued that anyone of the following trophies could be the most coveted:
The Borg Warner Trophy for the Indy 500
The World Cup trophy for soccer
The Trophy for the 24 Hours of Lemans
The Rolex Trophy for the 24 Hours of Daytona
The F1 Manufacturers Trophy
The F1 Drivers Championship Trophy
Admittedly I am not a ice hockey fan as I have ever only been to one professional game in my life. But, I think that the commissioner's comment was over stated IMO. What do you think?
When there are no quantitative statistics to support a statement it should not be made. You can't prove any trophy / cup is the most coveted , even if it might be. So I agree with the assertion that it was an over-statement that should not have been made in those exact terms. I have heard of some trophies being described as coveted, but they should not be noted as most-coveted.
According to the Internet, the Stanley Cup is the hardest to win among the major "stick and ball" team sports because the NHL has the most teams in their playoffs with 16.
So what about the NCAA Men's Basketball Championship trophy. They start out the playoff field with 64 teams.
Frankly I think this is a pretty weak argument for calling Lord Stanley's Cup "the most coveted trophy in sports". Matt, you gave some excellent examples. The Claret Jug, the Lombardi, the Wimbledon Trophy and the Venus Rosewater Dish, the Larry O'Brien Trophy, the Green Jacket, the Kentucky Derby Trophy, the ICC Champions Trophy, and the MLB Commissioner's Trophy are all pretty big deals, too.
Well Matt, since we can't talk Politics on this side of the fence, I guess your poke at hockey is ok. Apparently you think "driving" awards are the only thing that matter - Indy 500, LeMans, Daytona, F1. Nice that you included soccer; where's baseball, football, and basketball - truly team sports. . . These are sports that do not depend on how much money one can sink into the "car", just the team. I grew up loving all the driving sports you mentioned and still do but I think for many blue-colar hard working stiffs in the original 6 and other cities people think of the Cup as something special, as it is for me - a hockey fan after moving to Michigan a long time ago.

Dave, please explain that photo? I never intended to discredit the Stanley Cup. I just was disputing the claim about being the most sort after trophy in team sports .

Having all those all of those Hall Of Fame names stamped into the cup is unique amongst trophies. Congrats, to the Avalanche!
I love the look of the Borg-Warner Cup and the Lombardi Trophy.
Dave touched the cup. Special! My niece/nephew have pictures with it when the Penguins last won.
Lord Stanley's Cup is the oldest of the N/A team sports trophies. The current format requires winning 4 best of 7 series (only the NBA has that as well). I also think the grueling nature of hockey is just that much more physically than any other sport. Please don't argue baseball at all. Football, ehhh, when its 1 play, then 30 seconds to wait, then another. Basketball you can maybe make a case for, but, they stand around as part of plays a lot, and really, just running around, with limited physical contact. Hockey- always on the move, always physical, they beat the crap out of each other up to 7 times in 2+ weeks, then shake hands, congratulate the winner and move on.
Matt- the trophy's original parts were the bowl, then the top few rings. At some point, they added the first of the full rings. Each year, the winners names are engraved with the teams, players, coaches on the bottom ring. When it fills, the top full ring is removed so that the latest teams are always on the cup. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stanley_Cup
Yes, it's difficult to compare sport to sport, era to era, genre to genre in ANY comparison, but I personally agree and have no issue with the statement.
