Submarine Cuisine
I've been reading a fascinating forum thread over on eGullet by a guy that is the head chef on a nuclear submarine. His descriptions of what they eat, how it's stored and how much food they go through, how it's prepared and life in general on a nuclear sub are, as I said, fascinating.

A real world account of what our military personnel go through to help ensure our freedom and security.
It has been my experience that most Americans have no clue why they should show more support for our troops and our veterans.

I'm going to show this to the +1, because he is a Navy submariner (soon to retire!!). They get pretty good food on board, I think. He also commented on how wonderful the food on board the Royal Navy submarine was when he led a joint testing exercise recently. Nice post...thanks!
This was a lot of fun reading the Bubblehead Chef's comment about submarine menu. Thanks for sharing. It is so encouraging to know there are people like him out there serving our sailors with such devotion and caring spirit. It just makes you feel proud to be an American! Great job NAVY on beating Army for the Fall Classic!
^ The +1 and I were there!! It was INCREDIBLY COLD and windy. I can't imagine living somewhere like Green Bay. Lots of ladies were spending time in the ladies' room just to warm up, including me. Layers just didn't do the trick. At first I didn't think Navy was going to win, but they really exploded.
OK...back to food.

I think that it is interesting that after being posted for over forty-eight hours that there have only been four post in response to this original post?
Could it be a good example of just how much people have become complacent, and take for granted the hardship that our troops make part of their day to day existence to help secure our freedom and help protect us?
There is something wrong, when a society finds family separation for convicted felons and killers that are spending their time in prison away from family and friends more of an issue than that of of our military personnel being deployed and being away from their families. :-(

I heard submariners are special breed of people with strong sense of brotherhood among all submariners regardless of which side you are on. I've got to watch Das Boot again. I like all the submarine movies. It's got to be hard to live in a confined space for an extended period of time.

Regardless, I don't think you can draw conclusions about the state of the American people based on the number of replies to a thread in the Vintage forum...
At the risk of getting political, perhaps it's worth asking why we need so many ballistic missle submarines in this day and age. I do think we need attack submarines however.
Anyway, kudos to all who serve our country. The leaders that send them into battle and appropriate our resources should do so wisely and w/ consistency and clarity of purpose.
I too know a submariner; I believe the close quarters and long missions make for the strongest comraderie in the armed services. Also, needing to know / do multiple tasks makes them among the most highly trained.
