How long have you (or your person) been doing the puzzles? I gather they are new in the last year or so.

They have been popular in Japan for years. They suddenly made the jump to the US about a year and a half ago, or so.

I played a few of them but wasn't too interested, then about six months ago or so I started playing an online version. That got me interested enough to learn all the strategies.

My wife started sometime within the past couple of months. Since then I've seen dozens of people playing - friends in car clubs, guards at the hospital, people waiting for appointments, etc.
