Default Tax Time - 2023

Some good info about tax preparation software here: Rob and Dean may want to comment.

Thankfully (I guess) I am a simple man who leads a simple life so my taxes are simple as well. I've been using TurboTax so long I can breeze through through fed & state in no time at all as long as I have the forms.

I also use Turbo Tax, and have since the 90's, except for 2021 when I had the sale of my inherited farm to deal with. I went to a CPA for that year! Well worth the money.

Thankfully we don't have inheritance taxes here, the only good thing I can say about our tax system. They rob us in many other ways though.

^Actually, it was well below the threshold of inheritance taxes. It was treated simply as long-term capital gains, and I ended up taking a loss on it.

My last tax course was in 2014 and taxes are one thing that change every year. So any advice I give now is worth what you paid for it.

I have used H&R Block for at least 18-19 years because I did my taxes, my son's taxes and my mother's taxes. I stayed with it last year because I had estate issues to clean up. My son is now doing his own and except for my IRA mandatory distribution the rest of my income (muni-bonds) are tax free. So, this year I'm going to be using the IRS system for the first time.

We use a local tax preparer. He has been great for many years. I hate doing my own taxes.

Turbo Tax manages my side hustle (sports official) with ease. Being single and owning (mortgage) my home, I have a streamlined tax position.
