Default Thanksgiving Traditions

Do you have any other than the family get together?

I play Alice's Restaurant every Thanksgiving. This was a traditon me and my friends started years ago. My kids don't get it though.

We generally eat large amounts of food, then go see a movie.

Then we come back home and eat large quantities of pie.

On Christmas, my family puts TNT on and they play "A Christmas Story" over and over and over again.

We eat mass quantities of food then get very, very sleepy from that substance in turkey. Tryptophan I think it is. Then we watch football.

This year however, we will be a divided family. . We had plans to go to Myrtle Beach and spend Thanksgiving week there. Then my wife decided she wanted to go back to work after 19 years. Sooooo...she works in retail and NOBODY gets the Friday after Thanksgiving off. Since #2 son was psyched about going, we decided he and I (and likely one of his school friends) would go and mom and #1 son would stay home. P.S. 78 degrees in Myrtle.

The kids and I will make the usual feast (only a lot less of it) and still watch football. Then we'll call home. My wife will tell me that the plow still hasn't shown up yet, and I will tell her we were tossing the football on the beach in the sun.

We do value the traditional stuff. Dinner for 8-10 at our house in mid-afternoon, with a brisk walk afterwards to lighten up...since we will all feel like this =>>
Special thoughts:
*My 90 year old mother-in-law will be with it, which makes it special; she's very sharp and healthy, but you never know....
*My son Ben (20) will be home from Maine and dtr Melissa home from Boston and
*We often invite an older (Vintage ) friend without nearby family to join us for the T-dinner; it's a nice thing to do that some of you might consider

I'm not big into sports, so I will probably also spend Friday on:
*Writing checks to charities. We are very fortunate and like to share as much as we can at year-end
*Looking at investments for the end of year...a little tax-selling, decisions on putting some spare cash to work, etc.

Carmen, this sucks

I don't want to hijack this thread but it's a challenge that a lot of Vintage ppl face: \"Family does not need the $ but spouse wants \"fulfillment\"; gets job that ties down the other spouse and kids etc.\" I think it would be worth a separate thread....

For years we would meet at the my wife's parents house, as many relatives that would show which varied over the years. Eat appetizers mostly healthy but we also have polish sausage from particular meat market. We would all go the restaurant about one mile away. That way no one was cooking & cleaning all the time. We also invited people who didn't have family or just because (always at our cost). After the restaurant we would all return to the house for the pie eating contest - not how much but who made the best pie. For some reason all the participants won each year thus more pie the following years.

Now my inlaws live with us so we invited everyone to our house, while I haven't invited anyone else yet this year I know my wife has invited at least three families I haven't met. Still having the polish sausage.

Dinner is only served after the Cowboys game. Turkey can be either smoked or cooked on the grill. I have the responsibiltiy for making the sweet potato pie
