There I fixed it
Last weekend at the behest of my beloved I cut lower branches off of the maple in front of our house.
They were about 10-12 feet off the ground and 3-4 inches thick.
I was a little reluctant to get on top of the ladder with the chain saw so I used my battery operated reciprocating saw with a 9 wood cutting blade.
The saw made pretty short work of getting through the branch.
Of course since the GL550 was in the driveway I was careful not to whack it with the branch when it came down.
Alas I was fixated on the GL and ignored the light post at the end of the walkway.
In one gentle sweep, it snapped the 20" glass enclosure clean off of the light fixture and somehow knocked it onto the lawn without braking the glass.
I collected the pieces and brought them in the house and started disassembly.
Surprisingly almost nothing was broken, a little bent maybe but easily straightened.
The only true damage was the center rod of the lamp which was broken but.... it turns out I can buy a replacement piece for $3.35 and $^.70 for the shipping.
Assuming that is, that I actually bought the right part stay tuned.

As promised Emil, pictures.
The scene of the crime. we see the Gl on the left, The tree on the right, the discerning eye will see the fresh cut limb
The branch was about e same size as the remaining limb next to it.
And in the foreground is the aggrieved party, the now lamp-less white post.
The patient during surgery. it's touch and go bit looking hopeful. Sadly allof the bulbs were lost and will need to be replaced.
But we have the technology, it's time for an upgrade to LEDS!.
the center rod having been successfully removed from the patient. hope remains.
One can observe the severed end of the rod prepared for reconstruction by soldering until I found out the replacement part would be $10 including shipping.
Stay tuned, I'll have pictures after the cleanup and rod replacement.
For the record the wires are live but capped with wire nuts and the post is topped with a plastic bag.

Well the new center rod got delivered today.
I applied a brass polish and some elbow grease and cleaned it up a little and re-assembled it.
Also Installed some new LEDs for the broken bulbs.
And Voila!!
It works.

Always nice when a DIY project works.
