Default Thomas Friedman's column on Gas Addicts

Offered without comments:
A Quick Fix for the Gas Addicts.
by Thomas Friedman, NY Times (5/31/2006)

Is there a company more dangerous to America's future than General Motors? Surely, the sooner this company gets taken over by Toyota, the better off our country will be.

He's right, pretty much. The US should have a gas tax that covers the real cost of the expenses related to our gas consumption, including roads, air quality, climate change, traffic safety, and the costs associated with keeping the military in the Middle East. Bush's "borrow and spend" strategy may work fine for him (he'll be gone before the bill comes due), but it only makes the long-term problem worse for the rest of us.

But the Bush family made their money from oil. There is no way they will ever support a strategy designed to cut oil consumption.

He's also right about the Democrats being spineless. As usual, nobody in politics is willing to take a position that features a little "tough love" to the American people.
