A tiny Spring Fling 2018 Teaser

In order to get Emil out of Quebec City and back to Spring Fling, SF2018 is going to be held June 1-3. I'm not going to tell you where it's going to be (a fella has to have some secrets) but let's just say, it's one of the more popular places that have hosted Spring Fling before.
So you can start making those Spring Fling vacation plans now. See you at Spring Fling 2018.

That would be nice. But I'm betting on somewhere in the state of Pennsylvania. The long, dreary, two-lane state of Pennsylvania.

kgf3076 06-21-2017 10:23 AM

Lake Schlemiel? It has to tend towards the eastern center of the US because that's most fair for all. But Emil, I promise...one year, Rivière-du-Loup.

When I first read Ken's post I was thinking he meant Lake George and hoping he meant Mahwah, NJ. Bill is probably right, its probably going to be in Pennsylvania or maybe Virginia. Those seem to be the places of choice.

Unfortunately, it's not always simple finding a place that's centralized and easy for the majority to reach. We have people from Ontario (and yes, Quebec) as well as Indiana and Ohio and Pennsylvania. Northern VA (which includes Winchester) is about as far south as we can go and be convenient to the majority. Northern NJ, western NY, Upstate NY, are always possibilities. I've entertained the idea of Burlington, VT or Lake Champlain, the Finger Lakes areas, even Fishkill, NY. No place is totally out of the running. Keep on adding ideas and feel free to list places you wouldn't want to go.

I'd be good with that, Emil. But I bet you wouldn't understand a word of the brand of French they speak over there.

I know a two great places. One has perhaps the best drive (excluding Ashville here), and the other has no drive.......Hmmmmmmmm

Absolutely nothing. I could just schedule Rock the Dragon a couple of weeks later or Spring Fling a couple of weeks earlier and combine the two events. :D

Absolutely! Some damn fine, big, tasty lobster in the Miramichi.

Not like eating it 5 minutes after it's been pulled from the water (and cooked by a Quebecois chef).

S1997 06-22-2017 11:44 AM

Finger Lakes would be great... Or Cleveland/Lake Erie? Buffalo? Or will Canada allow suthin' neighbors to approach that close to their border? :)

kgf3076 06-22-2017 12:05 PM

The differences in numbering is due to me storing them by year and not event number.

SF2010 - Pittsburgh, PA (SF7)
SF2011 - 5/13-15. Asheville, NC (SF8)
SF2012 - 5/18-20, Antietam/Hagerstown, MD (SF9)
SF2013 - 5/16-18, Winchester, VA (SF10)
SF2014 - 5/2-4, Harrisburg/Hershey, PA (SF11)
SF2015 - 5/28-31, Glens Falls, NY (SF12)
SF2016 - Bethany Beach, DE (SF13)
SF17 - Selinsgrove/Shamokin Dam, PA (SF14)
SF18 - ??? 05/30 - 06/01 (SF15)

These are the locations I pulled from hotel BOE's and itineraries.

I think the Canadians are building a great wall, a beautiful wall, the greatest wall ever on the northin' border at the moment. :)

I vote for Put-in-Bay. A really neat island reached by ferry with lots of fun for adults.

I HAVE had my car on Put-In-Bay. Normally we would just ferry over but I was going to a wedding and then headed to Niagra Falls and then Lake George afterward for S2KDays (I think it was) so we didn't want to leave the car parked with all our stuff in it.. Ken is right. There is nothing to do there but drink and eat. Not that it is all bad, but it is not for everyone.

I forgot this is the 'young' club that wants to to drive to some place just to drive to some place! Shame on me, I am an old fart. I can understand driving some place to race but to drive to some place to just drive to some place... showing my age. Ken is right.

So as for northern OH, no great roads.... nothing like southern OH. So that's out. So based on Jim's suggestion that leaves the Finger Lakes.

I can. As I have been to every Spring Fling since the first one in 2004.

However, as I type this from a hotel room in Texas, I am too lazy to walk out to my S to look at the drive magnets tonight.

Actually, I never said that. Who knows, it might be clue number 24? :) Okay, just to satisfy Emil's insatiable curiousity, here's clue number 86 in a set of 5: East Coast.

The east coast, that narrows it down. With the next clue it should be a giveaway.

From Wikipedia (you can add or subtract as much credence as you prefer):

The East Coast of the United States is the coastline along which the Eastern United States meets the North Atlantic Ocean. This area is also known as the Eastern Seaboard, the Atlantic Coast, and the Atlantic Seaboard. The coastal states that have shoreline on the Atlantic Ocean are, from north to south, Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida.

DId you notice it doesn't say Pennsylvania? And that's it for today's geography lesson. The exam will be on Friday and it will be open book. :)

If you're trying to think of Watkins Glen, mon ami, I can send you an article or two (I might even have some pictures of my car during a race or two there).

Again, Wikipedia:

Watkins Glen is a village in Schuyler County, New York, United States. The population was 1,859 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Schuyler County. The Village of Watkins Glen lies within the towns of Dix and Reading.

and it's on the East Coast :) (and Schuyler is in Nelson County which is west of Albemarle County, which is also on the East Coast, even though people in Albemarle County sometimes have a problem accepting that fact, but that's old Virginia for you. And Earl Hamner lives in Charlottesville but wrote about people living in Schuyler which has a really large soapstone quarry if you happen to be in the market for some).

In the interest of correcting an error that I committed, Spring Fling wasn't hosted here before but other meets were, and as a clarification because I just realized that it needed to be done... in order to keep the costs down. we will not be in the exact same place as those previous meets but will be close. I think you will be pleasantly surprised and pleased when the location is announced.

We now return to our regularly scheduled brouhaha.
