Quite a few pics, so thought I would post them separately. These are from our trip to NC last weekend for Auntie's funeral in Kinston. We also took time to visit my niece and her family in New Bern and to travel to the hunting and fishing camp called Camp Bryan in Havelock, where I spent many, many wonderful times growing up. My uncle (Ellis Simon) was a member. You'll see quite a few pics from Camp Bryan. Also, tobacco and cotton plants. The +1 had never seen cotton on the plant. And a couple of pics from New Bern, which is named after Bern (Bear), Switzerland, hence the carved bear. Also the home of Pepsi Cola.
Gene - We saw alot of tobacco being harvested on the trip and trailers hauling it to be cured. Many years ago in Kinston, I went with Uncle Ellis to a tobacco warehouse to watch the auctions. Quite fascinating. The leaves are graded and put in big piles. This is after they are cured in barns as you mentioned. They are dark brown, and smell wonderful.
It was a great trip, but so laid back down there, I'm not sure I could live there all the time. The +1 probably feels the same way. There are condos in New Bern being built right on the riverfront which I really like. But probably will remain in the condo in DC and travel there when we can.
Emil - That is a bobcat. All the critters were caught/shot at Camp Bryan. The bear must have been shot before they were protected. Can't shoot them now. Probably can't shoot a bobcat, either. I was hoping to see lots of wildlife down there (deer, quail, dove, ducks, osprey, alligators, turtles, snakes, fish, etc) but it was the middle of the day and most of them aren't out then. We did see fish, not just those big bass on the wall. Aren't they incredible?? And one wild turkey and a great blue heron. And the +1 saw some turtles over by the fish breeding pond.
Not sure I've told this story, but when I was little, I scooped up some things in a can from the water that I thought were worms and took them back to my uncle to show him. Turns out they were baby copperheads! Not sure where the mother was, but glad she didn't get mad and bite me.
There are five lakes at Camp Bryan - Ellis Simon Lake, Great Lake, Little Lake, Long Lake, and Lost Lake. If you look at a map of Eastern NC just west of Havelock, you'll see them. It's a private club - only 40 members. Lots of baseball stars, like Babe Ruth and Ted Williams, were guests there at different times. I fished with Ted Williams when I was two years old. Have a pic somewhere.
