My sister-in-law's dad used to shoot chipmunks. That really got me upset. I realize there are lots of nuisance animals (and plants) around, but humans mostly created the problem. Canada geese are a big issue around here. It's sad. We had a goose nest out back of our house on the lake and the eggs were routinely broken, or injected, or whatever, so they wouldn't hatch. It was pitiful to see the parents wait and wait for the babies then finally give up and leave. Call me a softie, but I hated it.

I remember as a kid being given all the 22 shells I wanted to help rid a small lake resort of a chipmunk infestation. (They were everywhere).

I also remember ducks unlimited working to save the Canada goose as it's population was in severe decline. The same applies to deer herds in most states. The problem is while we now know better how to manage our wildlife, social antigun pressures have almost eliminated hunting, the most reasonable way to cull certain species.

The iguanas on Boca are a good example. If I lived there, I'd put a 25 cent bounty on iguanas and turn all the kids with pellet guns loose. Instead they're going to spend millions trying to rout them out with chemical birth control and nest predation.

I hate the killing of little critters even when they're pesky. However, we've been battling voles and moles for several years. The neighborhood cats have killed off all the cute little chipmunks we used to have, but for some reason the voles and moles evade the killer cats. We've had to resort to putting poison traps out in the holes to try to get rid of the pests since they've managed to tunnel into a portion of a hillside in our backyard and the hillside is becoming so riddled with tunnels that parts of it are collapsing. The moles have even managed to kill a beautiful redbud tree that we loved. This year we've become more proactive, but I have a feeling the moles/voles may win. So far I've not discovered any dead bodies.
