Washing Machines, part 2
I know we beat this to death a year or two ago, but our washer needs to be replaced and I was wondering what people think is the best value in washing machines? I'm not a slave to fashion, so I don't need a front loader just because they are popular. I would need a good reason to justify the higher cost. Are they more durable, cost efficient, and better cleaners?
If one of you have a subscription to Consumer Reports and would be willing to share the top ratings in the different price categories, I'd appreciate it greatly.
Also, how do the various digests rate the GE 4.1 cu ft Hydra-Wave, model WHRE5550KWW? I looked around on line at some opinion blogs and some owners loved it while others hated it. It looks like a good mid-price unit, but the negative reviews always give me pause.
Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

Type: Washing machines
Front-loading models
Price as tested: $800
Overall score 81
Everyone seems to be selling those new front-loaders now (and I mean wholesalers as well as retailers), but they're all so similar that I bet there are only one or two real manufacturers, like there are with laptop computers.
That said, we have two sets (front-loading washer/dryer combinations), and with one set, we have under-cabinet room for the 10" pedestals.
Although you end up with monolith-looking units, these have the advantage of truly easy loading/transfer/unloading. I know this sounds like a small thing, but it turns out to make the whole process of washing clothes way, way easier. (If you're not the person in the household who does the laundry, you're not qualified to have an opinion on this matter.)
So on top of less detergent/water/energy use, add ease of operation to the front-loader advantage. HPH

actually do use less water and energy, with the "HE" detergent you use a fraction of what you would normally use
I have appliances which have lasted 20+ years, with no problems.
I asked an Appliance repairman (not SALESMAN) which models were the best, with the least maintainence.
He's an honest guy...and told me.
Whirlpool.

Thanks for the reviews Dave. Did you happen to see the model number I listed?
Doc, I have so much trouble buying into the front loaders. I do not plan to relpace the dryer at this time, so maybe this is the way to upgrade to front loaders. Buying just the washer takes out some of the sting.
Plankster, thanks for the Whirlpool tip. I thought the Maytag repairman was the lonliest guy in town.
Beast, I ain't buying those steam cleaners. TOOOO pricey. I'm trying to retire.
