A few years ago I was recruited to be an instructor at a High Performance Driving Experience (HPDE) event at Summit Point Motor Sports Park in WV. After the first day, it became apparent to me that my Costco $12.99 "Court Classics" where NOT the right tool for the job. So I bought a pair of Piloti's driving shoes which I loved. So much so that I used them for every day wear and recently discovered two things. One that I wore a hole through the sole of the left shoe and that Piloti is now out of business.

I have taken them to a shoe repair place to have a half sole put on them and will be able to pick them up on Thursday in time for Spring Fling. I hope that they still will have the same "feel" but I am now wondering what other people wear and find comfortable if I am not happy with the results of the replacement half soles? I do not want to replace them with a high top racing shoe.

Any and all suggestions will be welcomed.

I never got into driving shoes, Matt. I always went with lightweight running shoes from New Balance. they were great for walking the course and driving back in my autocross days.

 

I was never into driving shoes either. Any old, worn pair of sneakers did it for me, so long as they were comfortable.

Five or six years ago I got a pair of Piloti low tops for Christmas. They are a model that is no longer available but were similar to the dtm, except for the lace system. They were extremely comfortable out of the box and were not very expensive. One feature I really liked was their use of nylon loops rather than eyelets for the laces. It made tightening the laces a snap...just tug on the lace ends and the laces tightened up uniformly along the top of the shoe.

I know Pilotis are considered by many to be overpriced and less than ideal, but these things cost about what a decent cross-trainer would go for. They have always fit my feet perfectly, been extremely comfortable, and held up really well in spite of becoming my favorite weekend shoes no matter what I would be doing.

 

I have a pair of Piloti shoes that I use for autocross. Well made, have had them for 10 years and they are still in good shape. I also have a pair of Reebok driving shoes that I bought on a closeout sale online a couple of years ago for $19. I've been very happy with them as well. Puma makes some nice driving shoes. Again, I caught a sale and picked up a pair for $39. The Pumas are nice, but run smaller than the others. Wish my Pumas were a little wider. The Reeboks and Pumas are both a suede like finish. PIA to keep clean, and if you drag your toes on the pavement, you'll wear right through the suede in no time. The Pilotis are a leather upper and more robust. Too bad they are out of business.

I find I really like the rounded heels for long distance driving. For daily use, I just wear a pair of sneakers.

 

I have super wide feet so regular driving shoes are out of the question. I typically go with a thin-soled pair of Sketchers or something comfortable for walking the course (autocross).
