John Van Alstyne
Former Dean of Academic Advising at WPI.

He was instrumental in the development of the WPI PLAN which is worth a read by itself. It revolves around actual learning and not 'getting grades'.

I've been thinking about this since I saw the thread earlier.

I think the "hero" label is often tossed about too easily.

To me a hero must show courage and be able to put others and their needs before his/hers.

I'll nominate my Dad. Served in WWII, worked his A$$ off for his family and our needs, and to me, showed a huge amount of courage and dealt with a long term illness with few complaints.

I miss him.

I'll think of more public heroes as the day goes on.

The men and women who served our country and made the ultimate sacrifice to preserve our freedom. My Dad and his 2 brothers served in WWII and thankfully they made it back.

I've always admired and respected Albert Einstein not so much for his supposed genius but more for his persistence in pursuing his passion even when it appeared to be hopeless. I have little math aptitude and I guess I'm in awe of those who do.
Another hero of mine is Jim. He's always happy, never dwells on those things that bring sadness into our lives and has the wonderful knack of being concerned about only those things that he is empowered to change. He inspires me.

My wife and her best friend Noelle.

My wife because I KNOW I couldn't tolerate living with me and her best friend because I do not know many (if any) people that can go through what she has and still be the person she is.
