Default Why is change so hard to take.

As we grow older, many of us become more set in our ways, more rigid, more unwilling to accept anything other than what has become for us the tried and true, comfortable way. Many of us go from being somewhat adventurous in our younger days to unadventurous and inflexible as we age. Why do you think that is?

The learning curve with some new things can be rather steep, and the older we become we tend to remember past failures, and choose not to start a new problem to deal with to get to the end result.

Yep -- I call it the "been there, done that" mentality. I often tell my daughter that I've settled into the patterns/lifestyle, etc. that work for me. I do, however, still enjoy learning new things, going new places and having new experiences -- it just feels good when I get back home and return to my little "routine."

Hmmmm...maybe we do get comfortable or lazy, whether that is a good or bad thing. Just go with what is familiar. I don't think I've settled too much, but then I was not that much of a risk taker/adventurer to begin with! I still have alot of enthusiasm for new things and people, though. Good old fashioned fun works for me! Woohoo!

EDIT...I think valentine (Darlene) and I are somewhat alike in our outlook.

Many years ago I was having a late supper in a Steak House and was listening to the conversation in the next booth. A management consultant talking to his clients. What he said stuck in my mind - when hiring a new employee, always go for the younger one. Older people react to new situations by searching their past experience for a parallel - which slows down their response time and also makes them inherently cautious. Younger people treat new situations as a challenge to throw themselves at - they may be rushing in where angels fear to tread but they do it quickly and (hopefully) the right decisions outnumber the bad ones. True?

Bob Dylan's 63rd birthday is on Monday the 24th.

The Times They Are A-Changin'

Come gather 'round people
Wherever you roam
And admit that the waters
Around you have grown
And accept it that soon
You'll be drenched to the bone.
If your time to you
Is worth savin'
Then you better start swimmin'
Or you'll sink like a stone
For the times they are a-changin'.

Come writers and critics
Who prophesize with your pen
And keep your eyes wide
The chance won't come again
And don't speak too soon
For the wheel's still in spin
And there's no tellin' who
That it's namin'.
For the loser now
Will be later to win
For the times they are a-changin'.

Come senators, congressmen
Please heed the call
Don't stand in the doorway
Don't block up the hall
For he that gets hurt
Will be he who has stalled
There's a battle outside
And it is ragin'.
It'll soon shake your windows
And rattle your walls
For the times they are a-changin'.

Come mothers and fathers
Throughout the land
And don't criticize
What you can't understand
Your sons and your daughters
Are beyond your command
Your old road is
Rapidly agin'.
Please get out of the new one
If you can't lend your hand
For the times they are a-changin'.

The line it is drawn
The curse it is cast
The slow one now
Will later be fast
As the present now
Will later be past
The order is
Rapidly fadin'.
And the first one now
Will later be last
For the times they are a-changin'.
