Are you affluent?
Lainey doesn't like being typecast as affluent. It's all a matter of definition.
Our admittedly affluent and large Main Line church had a 1.5 day program last weekend. It was called "The Ministry of Money". The presenters stated that, IN A GLOBAL SENSE, any family earning over $9,000 per year was AFFLUENT.....practically rolling in the green .
What do you think about this?

If thats the case we can roll the minimum wage back to $4.50 an hour (assume 2080 hr work year) and tell folks they are rich.
Actually there is a good speech by Bono which could tell how to use our money properly.

I agree with Lainey. Everything is relative.
I'm 5'6". I feel I am average height.
HOWEVER put me in a tribe of vertically challenged individuals (PC for 'short people'- old school name for dwarfs or midgets) and I'm a GIANT.
Put me in with Amazonian women (Tall) I'm a SHRIMP.
If the gross yearly wage of an individual in a third world country is less than what I make in a month, but the cost of things is relatively adjusted we are talking oranges and tangerines.
I have a dear friend who is a missionary to Liberia. The country is war-torn and there are few vehicles. Sure, I would be considered rich there. I have a vehicle.
There are many towns on the North and south Shores of Long Island that would consider me poor.
I have an aquaintance who has declared bankruptcy several times, but always is driving a BMW or something equal, has a wide screen TV (I don't even have cable or dish TV), a digital baby grand piano, and recently re-furbished her kitchen. The house is always one step away from forclosure and she's only kept the TV and car because she declared bankruptcy (she planned it that way
). My kids envy their family because of the possessions they have. I told them not to admire people with poor character, despite their possessions.
I would consider her poor.
and that's my two cents. (which won't even buy bazooka gum in america, but would feed a child lunch in a third world country
)

Next, paS2K... in your opening sentence of this thread, I, personally, think it is rather 'tacky' on your part to single out Lainey to perpetuate your thread "Lainey doesn't like being typecast as affluent. It's all a matter of definition."
Lastly, I feel 'Affluent' and wealthy, well-off, prosperous, comfortable... and
I think it would be educational for everyone to look up the median family income (half of families make less than this number) for a family of 4 in their state: http://www.census.gov/hhes/income/4person.html
This number would put you smack dab in the middle of the middle class, according to income distribution. The numbers are a couple of years old.
Many of us would find that we're more affluent than we think.

Jerry,
The only fair way to ask this question is to use the the number and the levels from the industrialized nations. When you factor in the nonindustrialized nations, of course the number is going to be low.
It really isn't a fair question.
Priests and Rabbis love using this tactic. "See how well off you are, in other countries you'd be rich making $9,000 per year." While that may be true, here in America you'd starve making many multiples of it. And, the fact is that most of us (on this board and especially in Vintage) live in industrialized nations.
