John Kelly (WaPo columnist) had a chat about proms, which prompted this thread. Do you remember your prom? Did you go? Did you go with a person to whom you are/were married? Give us your good/bad memories, and post your prom pic(s) if you have any.
I went with my HS sweetheart, to whom I was later engaged but did not marry. He went away to WA to college and I was in NC. Absence did not make the heart grow fonder. We both later married other people. He stayed married (not entirely happily) and I divorced after 24 years. I did see him a couple of times over the years. The last was when I went with my dad to his 70th (!) HS reunion in MT in 2004 (?). Here's a pic of Bernie and me about 35 years after the prom. He flew his plane to Lewistown from his home in western MT to see me. And a little pic of me in my prom dress.
I didn't attend my prom, nor do I remember much about high school. However, I did graduate Magna Cum Laude from the Keith Richards School of Organic Chemistry and Research. Or so I've been told.
I ended up attending four in a row from 10th grade through my first year after graduation (1st year of college). Seems I was always getting new girlfriends every spring.
I attended mine with a girl I wasn't dating. Her BF was not around, and I wasn't dating anyone, so we were what you might call a "couple of convenience". We got dressed up, went out to dinner, went to the dance, went to a party afterward. It was fun, and fairly low stress because we weren't really trying to impress each other. Much.
I attended my Sr Banquet, but not the Prom. However, my buddy borrowed his dad's off-road 4x4 pickup (complete with flood lights across the roof), and we crashed a post-prom party we knew about at one of the local sand pits. When we came over the hill with lights blazing, we were surprised to see most of our class mates were naked! We did a 180, and headed out when they started throwing beer bottles at the truck. Fortunately, no one knew it was us.
I left the area to attend college, and never went back (except to visit my parents). However, my buddy stayed in the community, and is now involved in state and local government.
[Edit]:
I met my wife-to-be in college (she was from Kansas City MO), and found that her dad had grown up in my home town in Nebr before my family moved there.
Last Friday, a male co-worker mentioned that his daughter had her prom that night.
Being the perpetual wise-ass I asked " gee, is she going to get lucky?"
Rather flustered he answered "No this was his daughter not his son..."
So I asked again "So, does that mean she's going to get lucky?"
We were all dying, he was bright red with embarrassment
I'm a baaaad person.
I later chuckled about his response, does he think that boys are the only ones who lucky on prom night? I'm guessing there are a lot of dates there as well.
May 8, 1975, I went to my prom with the guy I ended up marrying in July 1984. We both went to the high school and lived a few doors down from each other in North Hollywood. NOT Hollywood, different animal.

I am impressed. You are on a cross country trip and are still able to post old pics.
