I have not had time to experiment with the halogen or blacklight ideas. Too busy getting MR2 ready for Topeka.

I did discover that black is much easier to see the flaws. They show up pretty good in sunlight, but Flourescent lighting makes every little mark show.

I still have to figure out how to see anything on yellow and white.
Were you ever able to try the blacklight?

I just got a Brinkmann Maxfire Dual Xenon light. All the guys on the detailing boards refer to this light as "the swirl finder." After using it a couple times I can see why. Even on my Silverstone S2K it shows every little detail of the paint. I'd wager it will help you with your yellow paint.

Also, you can get it on Amazon.com. Right now they are running a special if you get their credit card then they give you $30 off your first order. Well . . . the light only costs $30. So, you only have to pay shipping.

Thanks. I'll have to look into that. I also plan to drag out an old quartz shop light and see if that does any good. I did try a 75w incandescent blacklight bulb that I have, but it was not big enough to be useful.

I have been resisting spending the $40 for the 4ft flourescent blacklight kust to try it. I may just try the Xenon since it has a recommendation.

Interesting, I think I'm gonna have to pick one of those up, cause my halogens don't do anything for me on Silverstone. And I see that it's rechargeable... how long does the battery last between charges?

Looks like an opportunity for a waxer's tech session. Everyone bring their favorite polishing lamp and compare.

The deTomaso guys in areas that have large populations of deTomaso cars do tech sessions occasionally. They get together at someone's home that has a large driveway or large garage and do service as a group. Some sessions are as basic as annual fluid changes and some sessions are more involved, like pulling the ZF transaxle and safety wiring the ring gear bolts.

Anyone tried any S2K gatherings like this?

We do "fluid days" and "wash & wax sessions" in the New England group several times per year.

I just installed 2 (soon to be 4) fluorescent overheads in the garage. They are 32watts x8 bulbs and they show everything.

I really need to do that too. Everytime I detail a car in my garage I pull it out and find I've missed a spot or two of wax residue.

The xenon light I mentioned really works well. It shows a few things fluorescents don't (unless you've got a lot of them). However, it's a hand held light. So, I wouldn't use it to provide light for detailing. Only to check paint condition before, during, and after a detail.

Dont know if you saw this in the "Thanks" thread from brimstone. Here is the lighting setup in my 20' X 20' carport.

I started out with a couple of four foot flourescent shop lights front and rear. They had indoor ballasts so they were not at full brightness below 40

I don't think that a black light will show the imperfections on paintless dent removal. They do use a flourescent light that is positioned close to the body when they work to make it easier to see what they are doing, and to be sure that their work is invisible once completed.
