definitely get a porter cable 7424xp if you're starting off. contact phil at detailersdomain and he'll help with any products you need to start off with, he's a sponsor here and I go to him for most of my detailing needs. he also has a forum with how-to videos which are a must watch. he has a promotion of 20% off that ends this week so i'd do it fast and take advantage of it.

YOU DONT WANT A ROTARY BUFFER...

you want a random orbital buffer, it's the difference between a beautifully polished car and burnt paint.

If it says random orbital buffer then it is ok to use. Is it force rotation or counter weight rotation? Forced you need to be a bit more careful as it has more power then a counter weight setup

That's some of the best advice a newbie could get. Phil is knowledgeable and willing to help. An exchange of emails with him will help him determine good starter products for you.

^ I assume you mean "forced" rotation not "fixed" and that would be a Flex3401 which I LOVE for first and second pass steps but finishing with an 7424XP....

If its a DW849, hands down the best buffer out there. Allot quieter than a 7424XP, the rotary fears are overrated. A DA maybe easier to start with, but it has lmitations, too. Owning the PC and the Dewalt, if I had to have one, I'd stick with the rotary. Hand finishing isn't as hard as heavy cutting with a PC. If there was a fixed rotation DA with a decent drive system that was reliable it would more ideal than either above.
its a dw462 random orbital polisher...ser#4749....120vac....3000opm....double insulated.. so is this a good 1? can a noob like me burn the paint on the car?
