There's a link to the howto write up at the top of this forum. Real easy to do.

The poster used APC (All Purpose Cleaner) from Meguiars I think. Its this green sudsy liquid. Wrap yer alternator in aluminum foil to keep it dry. Wet the inside down, spray the cleaner on with a squirt bottle, and agitate with a soft brush (or a mother in-law, baZING! ). Rinse, repeat as necessary.

my preference as far as cleaners goes is to use the least aggressive product that will do the job...
for normal engine cleaning, to me that means a few products with p21s total auto wash at the top of the list-

http://www.p21s.com/products/bis_taw.html
and
http://www.p21s.com/products/bis_taw11.html

or

http://store.bettercarcare.com/p21-130.html

and the link above has an excellent "how to" write up...

I try not to use Simple Green on anything. It often changes the color of many parts and there has been much written that it corrodes aluminum.

If your engine is not too dirty, try S100 Total Cycle Wash. It has some mild cleaners to break up road grime and grease. It also leaves your black bits "dressed." It is a great one-step on a fairly clean engine.

P21S Total Auto Wash is not the same product.

Cd-2 is perfect for treating and protecting and no it not stay very greasy. It will dry to a very glossy better than new look and last a long time. it is just a dressing and will not clean.

I use diluted simple green automotive and a brush. I then rinse, dry up the large pools of water not a lot. After that i spray the whole engine area and let it dry for 20 minutes. looks perfect when done.

Does anyone know if simple green automotive is really bad b/c I use it on my tires and I am sure a little overspray gets on my nice new VOLKS?

Is there some all purpose cleaner that you would recommend?
