I saw the grit guard thing and thought "cool idea" but it's not work $10 for me (plus shipping since i live in hawaii.) I have a bunch of buckets that all fit together with about an inch or so of space when nested. They are just laying around so I took 2 of them and a drill (some of you see where this is going....)

Next I drilled a bunch of small holes into two of the buckets and voila, redneck grit guard. You may wanna hit it with some sand paper for a second just to get rid of any burrs that may catch your mitts.

Now I just place the drilled buckets in the wash or rinse buckets respectively and the small amount of grit that comes off of my S ends up in the bottom of the solid buckets. Might not be as a good as a grit guard or as pretty, but it gets the job done until I become less cheap.

So far it doesn't make too much of a diff on my S cause it doesn't get too dirty, but when my folks bring their cars to get washed, there is usually a ton of yuck at the bottom afterwards.

Out of pocket cost $0.
time was less than 15 minutes if I remember right, including time to sit on my arse and drink a pepsi.

I bought my buckets with grit guards in them from Big Lots for $2.96. Black magic makes them and they are very nice.

Grit guards make sense to me. There is nothing you can really do for suspended fines and I just don't want the mitt to fall all the way down to the bottom. If I leave the mitt on the edge of the bucket, half the time it falls over to the ground.
