Default How to tackle this issue?

Buddy of mine had his Celica repainted and tail lights were smoked. Deet Tee Dee shop smoked them so dark the light didn't even come through when he hit the brakes. He was pulled over on the drive back home and was threatened to be towed if he doesn't do anything about this.

Car was parked and he got some sand paper and went at it. Needless to say the tails have 2 to 3 coats on them, 600 sand parks but not all the way down to plastic.

- How can I remove the spray off the plastic with out sanding them for 10 days straight? lol

- I have Meguairs 105 and 205, that should do the job right? If not Turtle Wax Rubbing compound will come in to play.

Removing the paint?/tint? off the tail lamps looks like the hardest task.

Thanks!

Oh no I understand. I am asking if there is a spray/product that will take paint/spray tint off with out harming the plastic?

I mentioned Compounds just to let you know I can take care of the sand marks. Just need to know what to do with the tint.

bluebat sells overlays (vinyl or something) for the celica and your buddy should have known that prior to having his tails sprayed. the tails are junk now, i wouldn't even bother trying to remove the paint, should've asked newcelica.org prior to doing the project. it's better to ask and feel like an azz rather than not and get punked in the azz...

I won't swear to it, but my gut tells me that any chemical strong enough to strip paint is likely strong enough to damage the plastic underneath.

Sounds like a trip to the junkyard might be in order for your friend? Toyota made a zillion of those things, I suspect some of them are already in the yards by now.

If you decide to sand them, wetsand them and use a finer grit sandpaper.

I agree that any paint stripper will probably damage the plastic.

I know this is a dumb question, but are you doing this with the lights on or off the car?

Off the vehicle. He told me the story. I said let me see what I can do, they just sitting and doing nothing. He is rocking some ugly altezzas right now. EWWWW

He has the rare tails, they came with the action package. They definitely look better then any other Celica rear tails out there.

Try immersing the taillight lense in dot 4 brake fluid. Depending on the paint type and number of coats it could take 4-6 hours to remove the paint. Check frequently to ascertain the progress, use caution when handling the taillight and do wear rubber gloves!

Did you try paint thinner? I painted my tails years ago and used thinner to get a few layers off before re-doing them on the old civic.
