Default Ok I did something extremely stupid...

Ok, so I'm not looking to get flamed, because I'm a complete idiot and I realize what happened was my fault. But last night I left my top down. Forgot that I had it open. And this morning it poured and I didnt notice til I woke up this morning.

I ran outside quickly raised the top and sat in a soaked car.

I ran back inside grabbed all the towels I have and started drying the car out. I went first to the areas where the switches/etc were located and tried to dry things out. While this was going on, I cranked the car and maxed out the heat with the a/c on to help remove the water. After I dried everything down, I went back inside and let the car run for awhile and came back out to check things.

It seems so far that everything works...knock on wood.

I continued to let the heat run for probably 2-3 hours and the car actually seemed to dry out fairly well. Everything seems mostly dry now, except the floor is still slightly damp.

So, I guess the point of my post is to see who has done this, and what they did to clean the mess up. Any pointers for what I should do now at this point?

I appreciate the help and would appreciate people from refraining from any smartass comments. I'm usually very particular with the car and happened to slip up. Thanks for the advice.

How does the leather look? I'd clean the seats with leather cleaner/conditioner

I'd make sure you dry the carpeting to prevent mold and odor from appearing.

The leather looks fine actually--and the seats actually feel dry too. I was very surprised.

It seems you handled it fine.. just try to shampoo the carpets with a machine and take it as a lesson

glad to hear that the engine is okay but the carpets may be damp underneath, and by underneath I mean where the carpet meets the metal floor and also the spongey cushion that's beneath the pedals. I bought a flood damaged car and even though the flood damage occurred last year, the carpet/mat that i just mentioned were still damp!

you could try just putting your car all day in a sunny spot with the top down and hope that works. but the safest bet would be to pull out the carpet and let it dry out of the car.

Can you take the carpeting out of the car? Is this easy to do? I would definately do that if its easy enough...

i'd do some good carpet cleaning with a good carpet cleaner foam, because wet carpet that's been sitting for a while tends to harvest a nasty stench. also do some leather conditioning and get an air freshener.

There shouldn't be any smell unless mold/mildew starts growing. And mold or mildew shouldn't start growing if evertyhing gets dried out. I'm not sure what the best way to do that is, though. Certainly heat and AC together is a great start.
