Patching a top
My car was broken into prior to my ownership, so there is a 2.5"x5" rectanglular hole on the driverside. I got vinyl glue today and was wondering how potent is the top cleaners like raggtop and the like? will it eat through the vinyl glue?
I planned on getting one of those iron-on patches like back in the day when you had a favorite cartoon and you patched it on your clothes. Well since rainy season hit earlier then I anticipated, I was wondering if anyone ever tried using the fabric from an umbrella to patch holes? It's black, its water-proof (at least i'd hope it is) and best of all, it's next to free since I have a lot of broken umbrellas.
Anyone have any advice for me? I've been using duct tape but that stuff flies off when you get up to ~~ 50-60mph. I got vinyl glue just now and am going to attempt to glue the umbrella patches (interior and exterior patch)

The material for umbrealls is probably far to weak and does not have the tensile strength required for your application. My guess would be that it will tear up rather quickly.
Are you patching the inside or the outside?
The Duct tape will not hold once it gets wet, the glue used will delam one it gets wet.

my thoughts- 303, vinylex, etc are pretty mild products and should not interact with your glue.
i say dont cheap out with the vinyl. get some good stuff - if you glue a cheap product, it gets harder to reglue a good product later on if you try.
how are you applying the duct tape? i would not put it on only the outside. either on inside alone or inside first then outside also. when you get your perm vinyl, be sure to get the glue from the duct tape off before you glue the good stuff.
