I just finished doing alot of comparisons with cost and convenience in mind. I added the cost of purchasing what I need to get started separately and together as a package. THe packages offered the best bang for the buck when buying all your needed fundamentals to start. I ended up buying a complete kit that had everything I needed.

Yes you will need a backing plate.

And don't forget you need good towels.

If you do buy this kit make sure you are getting the new version of the Pinnacle polishes. They just changed the formula on both polishes in this kit.

It doesn't really matter where you buy the backing plate. It's not an expensive item. So, all the stores are within a couple of dollars on the price.
