Is this Denzil's gauge? Has he experienced any abnormally low readings with it?
Yeah it is. He's never used it as far as I know. I think I'm the first. But i'll double check with him.

I recalibrated it once I saw those REALLY low numbers. Unless the calibration blocks are "off"
yeah, something's gotta be wrong here. My old AP1 and my g/f's AP1 have been polished much more aggressively than yours has. If your readings were accurate, I would have burned through the clear multiple times by now

great advice above...

1. a good clay will not swirl the car - wash, clay - maybe not enough lube? rewash and should see no added swirls

2. borrow someone elses paint gauge and get a second opinion on your thickness (that would not make me happy to spend that kind of money and have the thing giving me un needed worries). recalibrate if necessary.

Aaron -

Something doesn't add up here, for sure.

My PTG showed up tonight - same Highline as Denzil has - and I calibrated it, then measured my 2004. The only areas where I got numbers anywhere near that low were on the underside of the trunk, in the areas where the paint isn't shiny, and pretty obviously has zero clear coat on it. Those readings were roughly 58-64.

I didn't make any average calculations, but I'd say the average on the exterior of my car is 120. Low of 109 on the hood, right next to the edge by the windshield. Thickest reading I took was 150, passenger side rear fender, near the antenna, which could have been a false read since that part of the car is curved. Just below that, on the vertical portion of the rear fender, it was 119. I'd say the whole car was an average of 120. Hood too.

I gather he gave you the directions for how to set it? They're not the most well written directions in the world, but they're serviceable. If you've got any questions, post up.

Hey espelirS2K, I'm in the bay area too, I have a highline PTG that measures my '03 s2k's paint to around 100-130 microns. If you want, I'd be happy to meet you somewhere in the bay and take some readings. Shoot me a PM and we can set something up. I live in the south bay, but I'll be visiting my parents in the north bay this weekend, if that's easier to get to.

Also, you might want to try ValuGard's Neautralization system (ABC wash), which chemically cleans all of the contamination usually left behind by clay baring.

FMINUS uses this system in his detail of this GPW s2k with very thin paint.

Hey, I'd love to!! I have the highline to but maybe it's the meter its self? I'll PM you now.

I would get that but it's a fair amount of $$ and I'm super strapped for cash right now (dry spell in details).

Thanks
