Question on Claying
Have only clayed my car twice. This is a new process for me. My question is, how much pressure do you use while rubbing? Is this a case of the harder you rub the better the results or the amount of times you pass over the surface?
Good question.
Clay is an abrasive substance and don't let anyone tell you otherwise. So, the harder and faster you rub with it the more abrasive it becomes. However, clay is also extremely effective and I have yet to see an example of a car where very mild pressure did not suffice. In fact, IMO you increase your risk of marring the paint with the clay if you press harder. The other important thing is to be sure to regularly remold your clay to present a clean surface to the paint. Otherwise, the dirt you just removed will start scratching the paint.
Moderate pressure, a little bit harder than you would if you were buffing dryed wax off with a towel. And be certain to keep the area you're claying lubricated. I work the clay back and forth only about 3-4 inches at a time. You'll know when an area is complete. It will feel absolutely slick compared to areas you haven't clay barred yet.
