UPDATE. I tried WD-40 and it seemed to work. It only lifted a bit. I'll try the peanut butter as well. I'm trying to post pics that i have on flickr but my mac wont let me grab the image URL. Here is a link to the two pics. Thanks for all the suggestions.

If all else fails try 3M adhesive remover, a little goes a long way and then rewax the area when you are done.

+1 for 3M Adhesive Remover. I've worked on cars where nothing else helped, but 3M's chemicals did the trick.

Go get yourself some "turtle wax bug and tar remover" http://www.buy.com/retail/product.asp?sku=...tingid=52636076 . Be sure to buy the one out of the can "like pictured in this link" and not the spray on kind. I bought both and the spray was completely ineffective. The stuff in the can worked much better. It took awhile b/c i had several spots all over my car from parking under a pine tree but this stuff did the job.

Whatever you do, DON'T use a scotch brite pad....

Now, I know to all of US this is common sense. Just finished a hood and fender of a lady who did that. Took 1500, 2500, and two steps of compounding to remove the scratches about 85-100% depending on location. What a nightmare! Pics soon...

You might also try Stoner Tarminator.

I got some sap from old pine trees on my car, and none of the suggestions mentioned above did the job. What did? Rubbing alcohol, and the sap came off easily with just a little bit.

Thanks for everyones suggestions. I tried rubbing alcohol and it worked like a charm. I was amazed how quickly it came off. Their is a stain though so I will get a good wash and wax this weekend. I will post pics tomorrow of the before and after. Thanks to everyone who gave me suggestions. All of them were a step in the right direction. If you have hardened tree sap use rubbing alcohol.

Just an FYI: the stain that's still sitting on your paint is going to need to be polished out. It might require something pretty aggressive, but I've never run into a tree sap mark that I couldn't remove. If you only wax over top of it, you'll have a really shiny stain.
