Default What are the biggest mistakes you've seen people make in detailing their car

Wanabe, Viper??? If you could give advice to someone getting serious about detailing their car, what mistakes would you have them avoid, pitfalls, etc.?? Like, what's worth the money to invest in your personal detail kit, and what's a total waste??

Thanks in advance, fellas!

my advice would be to keep it simple...
start out with the basics and add on as you find out what you need and want. i dont believe in one-kit-for-all. i know that if i had started out with all the equip that i have now, i would have been overwhelmed and prob would have given up!!

i also like the idea of detailing with a friend- so if you can find someone who has been doing it for awhile, ask if you can join him/her- and what products they would like for you to bring along.

some more basic ideas are in this thread:

does that help?

Here are some of the things I notice, and when I see it, yank my car outta there...

1. Detailer's clothes: If the guy's wearing a jacket, jeans, button shirt, there's a high chance his/her zipper, button would scratch your car if he/she goes for the roof or hood.

2. Sponges: If the detailer does not have a separate sponge dedicated for the top and bottom half of the car, it's sayonara time.

If these two basic criteria are not met, no use talking more about clay and wax blah blah blah...

Sorry, I don't really "detail" my car. I'm a "wash it, blow dry it and polish it twice a year kinda guy.

yeah. haven't you noticed that all of xviper's car pics are either really far away or of the engine bay for a DIY thread? man's gotta be embarrassed to show the S wearing 1/2 the town's dirt. you'd think he's used that freakin' fire truck behind him to wet down the car some time, huh?
