Default Wheel bearing in driver's rear causing squeaks

Hello everyone,

I recently brought my car down to SD. Just a couple days ago, my driver's side rear wheel starting making clicking/squeaking sound that persists when I drive slowly and in a straight line. So I brought it into a shop, they couldn't pinpoint where the problem was but he advise me to change the brakes because it was getting bald anyway, so I did. But the problem still persisted and I did further research and found that the bearing might have been shot. The shop then took off the wheel cap and found rust inside which could damage the wheel bearings. Then they advised me to change the wheel bearings. However, I have already dropped $225 on changing the brakes, and being a college student myself, I cannot afford to pay another $250 to change the wheel bearings. I guess the good news is that the wheels are not rattling or anything when I push it on a jack. So, the bearing shield might just needed some cleaning. I dont know.

I'm hoping to see if any good hearted San Diegans have a couple hours to spare to diagnose/change my wheel bearings at a lower price than what I'd have to pay for at a shop.

More information on the problem:

Thanks in advance!

It could be an axle or wheel bearing. In my experience the wheel bearing is more of a whirring noise and the axles are more of a click noise. If it's persistent with acceleration it may be the bearing. If it's just when changing direction from reverse to first and so on it could be the axle nut.

If it's the bearing you're more than likely going to want to change out the hub as well as it may be damaged.

Well I just got my car back from ball Honda and it was doing exactly what your describing. It was indeed my LR bearing and hub, Honda could not figure it out because all they did to troubleshoot the problem was to put it in 1st. Gear on the lift and give it some throttle. But on the lift it would not make the noise. But when they drove it, it would, they said they didn't know what was wrong so I just had them swap the bearing and hub. I probably should have just ordered the parts and fixed it myself but I didn't have the time. Oh and for the hub, bearing, and labor ball Honda charged me $608. I got ripped but it saved me about 4 days of being without a car.

Wow, $608? That's a rip off alright. I paid around $310 for mine. I hate the stealerships. I remember about 1 year ago they wanted $250 for oil, tranny and diff fluid change. Funk that.

I did mine with an oem hub and bearing did it myself for 100 bucks. Good thing I don't like the dealerships around the area.

what if yours only faintly clicks when making hard right turns and kinda clicks when you go in reverse???

is that just a re torquing of the axle nut issue?

Yes, just faintly clicking during slow-acceleration(and at low speeds) and slowing down. It sounds like a worn spring when I start off slowly from a dead stop. Not sure about reverse, but I do not hear anything when switching from 1st to reverse and vice versa. It'd make the same noise during a turn, but only when I go at a slow speed or deccerlerating. Maybe I will try retorquing the axle nut and cleaning off the rust and regreasing it. but I dont have the tools with me. =/

you can probably do it yourself if you rent the torque wrench from Kragen. I believe the axle nut is 36mm and needs to be torqued to 220ft lbs.

This issue was my worst s2k nightmare!! If you hear clicking its already to late, I went and had my axle nut retorqued and the bearing still went out and shot my hub in the process.. if u hear the wirring or any whinning noise at all you might wanna watch out!! My bearing clicked out of position and put so much stress on the rear it sheared off my axle nut and 5 inches of the axle, my abs freaked out and the wheel almost came off... I dealt with this for weeks as one side went like a week after the other side, I went to Pacific auto wrecking and a got a good deal on some low mileage hubs and havnt had problems since!! This is probably the shittiest thing that can happen aside from blowing your motor, call and talk to keno at jc service in kearny mesa they do good work and at a pretty good price. Like all you guys said I couldn't believe that will all the s2000 that have this issue they cant dianose it easier... its all the same it starts with clicking and then the wirring noise, you need to replace the whole hub.. hope this helps!
