Three cars, three installers, two of which were OS Giken dealers - I'm thinking we've taken most (albeit not all) of the install risk out of the equation. One had spacers, two did not, so spacers aren't a magical cure either. All three from different OS Giken shipments, so it wasn't just one bad batch.

My car likely has the most power of the three, but nothing near what some track / drift cars make, so it shouldn't be that. I probably was harder on mine than Des was - I typically had codrivers and ran it at more events. Still went out in 2 months...

And I've told Colin this - my car made exactly the same noises his did (occasional thunk / clunk on tight turns in parking lots, etc) until it catastrophically failed on Max's Saturday PM runs last weekend. I only got four runs in the car before it broke, and the car just got progressively worse. The diff is essentially locked now.

The stock Torsen is going back in the car for now, until this gets sorted out. Now we've got three failures, I'm hopeful it's not a design issue... Either way, until we can confirm it's NOT, I'm not willing to spend $$ on a replacement part that will only last 2 months. I want to give OS Giken the benefit of the doubt for now, but I'm unfortunately only slightly optimistic.

Has anyone tried a different diff other than the OS Giken?

I chimed in even though my car is not STR legal. Reason being, one of the topics for discussion is what excludes my car from being legal. I purchased the car with KPro (RSX-S computer), and everything to return the car to stock except a catalytic converter (which I now have). However, I cannot justify handicapping my car that much (MY04) since something that has the same (technically fewer, as flashpro has expanded map resolution and refresh rates for datalogging) benefits as Flashpro which is legal in MY06+. So until (if ever) full ecu's become legal I will continue to run in BSP with what would otherwise be an STR car. Granted, I understand that opening full ECUs may give larger advantages to other vehicles, but based on what I have seen (havent really looked into it indepth) perhaps that would promote more vehicle diversity in a class that is quite clearly becoming populated almost exclusively by miatas/mx-5s and s2000s.

When is a weight difference significant?
100 lbs (anything much less is approaching the full tank/big dinner/average driver weight difference)
Which ST ECU rule/proposal is the best overall performance equalizer?
Full ECU replacement (keeps me from STR, and would give all s2000s a level playing field as far as tuning)
Is your STR prepped S2000 a daily driver
No (my car is not STR prepped, but is driven to events and occasionally on weekends/when DD is under the knife)

SC_Highlander is running the Carbonetics. I have pm'd him in the past asking what he though of it.

I put about 1000 break-in miles on it in my street s2000 before transferring it over to the race car. I haven't given it another thought since installation. It's been perfect. During the breakin miles, I noticed it make a little noise on tight parking space turn-in at low speed, but I don't notice this anymore -- possibly because the racecar is loud, possibly because the noise has gone away. In total, the diff probably only has less than 1500 miles on it. I plan to pull it off in the next couple of months and send it back to Ben... and have him give everything a once-over while he has it.

So i'm looking over the rules and I see...

14.6

G. Brake calipers may be replaced, provided the number of pistons is
equal to or greater than the original number of pistons. Caliper
mounting brackets may be replaced to accommodate this change,
but may serve no other purpose. Alternate caliper brackets must bolt
to the original caliper bracket mounting location(s). The alternate
caliper and bracket assembly must be no lighter than the Standard
assembly.

So we can replace brake calipers?

So I have been curious and haven't seen the question yet. Are the radiator cooling plates legal in ST*? I know you aren't removing materials to add it, just figuring out where that lies in the rules.

Correct. While most of the weight is in the caliper, there is some to be saved in the rotor as well.

Not to mention brake feel and longevity.

Tangentially relevant: KJ Christopher from the STAC mentioned on the Porsche forums that he's investigating putting the base 986 Boxster in Street Touring (presumably STR).

Was that listed in a pre-December Fastrack as a proposed rule change? The Dec. Fastrack stated that 14.6.A would be replaced with the current wording of 14.6.E with the exclusion of "STX & STU" at the beginning. So, all street touring classes now have the same brake allowances as STX and STU. Calipers & rotors can be replaced with alternate units under this rule set.

The finalized rules for ST in 2012 were in the December Fastrack. I don't recall how the brake allowance was changed from 2011.
