If you feel under the rear panels around the wheel well, there is a piece of rubber that holds, for lack of a better word, shit.

Yep. The rubber piece that slips over the wheelwell flange. They used it for years on many models. It holds crud and water. It also has metal inside it. If the rubber gets punctured, the metal in it rusts very quickly and helps speed up the wheelwell rust process. Get rid of em. Especially If you feel any swollen spots in them, which means it's rusting inside. If you're OCD like me, you can paint the inside of the flange with bedliner and it will be sealed forever.
