Help car keeps shutting down?
Hey everyone, I have an issue that I can't seem to figure out. A week ago while I was driving my car suddenly had no throttle response and was winding down till it just shut off. I pulled over let it sit for a few mins then it started back up only to do it again. So I replaced the battery as it was about 4yrs old and everything was fine for a couple days. Then it happened again so I replaced the alternator along with a new battery. Driving home from work it happened to me again. Just now I bump started it and it fired up after not starting with a jump box attached, and the other day someone jumped me with their car and it started right up. My s2k is an 01 with about 157k miles I've recently done new plugs and coil packs, and 2 new batteries and an alternator within the past week. I just went and checked all the fuses related to spark and fuel and none were broken. So I'm reaching out to the community to see if anyone has had a similar problem or any possible insight into what else could be the cause of this. Thanks!
So, after a few days of sitting as I couldn't work on it I went back to it and it started up fine but stalled out after about 10 mins or so. I've now checked all the fuses which aren't broken and looked at the main Relay which doesn't seem to have any cracks or anything. I have checked the oil to which I see no metal shavings. I checked the battery with a volt meter which is fine. One thing I notice is the fuel pump doesn't prime after it stalls out. If I turn it on after it sits for a while the pump primes everytime I turn the key. After stalling out it no longer primes. Like I said all the fuses seem to be OK nothing is broken inside them. Seems like its just not getting fuel once it starts and it's running out of whatever it had.
You wouldn't happen to have access to a gauge to measure axial play, in your crank? Or know a good mechanic, that could measure it?
IMHO.... you really don't want to be driving the car, until you've ruled-out thrust bearing issues. If it is the thrust bearing... the wear could get to the point where the engine seizes up. And the repair cost exponentially rises.
Good luck! I hope it's only the fuel pump.

I haven't driven the car since I made this post only started it to try and rule out wiring issues. I do have an aftermarket clutch which I only found out after removing my transmisson a couple years ago when my clutch fork hanger broke. I don't have access to a gauge to check for play and I'll have to have it towed to a shop for that I suppose. I'm just trying to rule out things I can do myself in my driveway at the moment.
