rattling noise on clutch engagement
ok guys, can someone help me figure out what this is.
When the clutch engages I get a rattling noise. I can't hear it from the inside of the car but when I'm driving close to a fence or a wall or even passing another car, I get a rattling sound bouncing off the item I'm passing. I always drive with the roof off so it's very noticeable and it only hear it when there's an object to reflect the sound off. It's similar to the sound I hear when the disc pads need replacing but this is only when engaging the clutch. I keep thinking it may be the clutch springs but I'd appreciate any thoughts. Thanks

anyone have any ideas? The car is on 305,000, I had a new clutch on about 260000. The previous clutch lasted about 200k.

There is currently a thread named Highest mileage on clutch were somone posted they replaced clutch around that mileage only because release bearing finally went. The disk still had meat on it.

I had something like this.. but it was my cat starting to rattle - before it got bad. I'd only hear it while driving by dividers and shifting. Couldn't hear it during normal driving for a while.
Can you take a rubber mallet to your cat and see if it makes the rattle you hear? It might not be your clutch... But hey no sound clips so just going off similar way I heard the noise like you explained
Mine would start to rattle when there was driveline shifts, ie going to neutral, changing gears etc, the frequency the cat was vibrating at sounded like a rattle for a moment while it vibrated to the new frequency the motor was vibrating at so it seemed to line up with the clutch, but it was the cat.

That's very interesting, thanks. I had a thought that it might be the cat. I'll investigate. Mine was new in Nov 2012 at 165,000 so I've done 150k on this one and it still within it's 7 year warranty. Oh please let it be that
