ah yes hantavirus.
I mentioned in the vacation thread I do not like hantavirus.
That was before I knew that direct human to human transmission was possible.
So we got a boat full of guests who've been exposed to hantavirus.
A bunch have tested positive and everyone is being repatriated to their home countries.
The World Health Organization, ( WHO) has set forth a set of recommendations including isolation for 46 days to ensure against further transmission.
The guy running the program for the USA has said ( paraphrasing) we don't need their recommendations, we already have the needed expertise.
The fact that the US has mouse transmitted hanta experience wouldn't be relevant... right? ... right?

I was surprised to hear the female world health person saying that transmission between people was not likely unless you had intimate contact with the infected people. They went on to say that it was not a risk like Covid was. But there were people infected on airlines who had zero contact with the infected passengers, it was transmitted just by being in the same space as those infected. They have misjudged this and it is spreading. I'm no expert but it doesn't sound good to me.
We are pretty careful cleaning spaces out with a vacuum or blower due to potential rodent droppings. You don't want to get it. Common in droppings from what I understand in the southwest. Have not heard of human to human transmission but I guess it is possible.
Well we were not even allowed to question where the last one came from even a little bit so that wont change this time will it?
From what I read, the only type capable of person to person contact comes from that area of S America specifically. So kinda hard to say it did not come from there.
I tried looking up the people on the airline. All I found was that they were monitoring them (the ones that had it before they flew back or ones that they know had direct contact) but that the only people that had that strain (that they know for sure) did not catch it sitting on a plane next to others.
The people I know that were actually happy to live in masks 24/7, order all their groceries and never leave the house (yep, I 100% know some of those people) are already chomping at the bit for another big lockdown. Honestly given all I have read about this, there is zero reason for people to be freaking out about it. If something happens to change my mind, then I will change my mind. Same way I treated the last thing. And hopefully more people this time are that way than last time vs choosing a "side" and sticking to it no matter what the outcome like is usually the case.

Some public health experts have accused the U.S. government of being slow to respond to the hantavirus outbreak. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. rejected the notion that cuts at his agency had left the U.S. less prepared.

BBC Isolation Guidelines Rejected: The WHO recommended a 42-day isolation period for passengers exposed to the virus. In contrast, U.S. officials, including acting CDC leadership, downplayed the risk, arguing against strict protocols and asserting that human-to-human transmission is rare.
If they don't test pos. they will go home.
Once the passengers get back to their own homes, they will undergo daily home-based monitoring for the next 42 days, a CDC official said.
Oh, one more thing. Unlike Covid(which you could spread with no symptoms) , if you're not showing any symptoms you're not contagious with hantavirus.

This is all about risk mitigation.
Sure staying in quarantine must suck. People have lives etc.
Let's assume for a moment, perhaps this hantavirus bug is a new variant that has a.much lower threshold of transmissibility.
You only get one, one such at containment.
I am sure that the government could easily recompense the quarantined for the time spent to keep them longer.
